This season, we partnered with some of our favorite mothers who happen to be multi-talented artists, photographers, and designers. We asked them to capture their littles in their natural elements. The result has been a series of beautiful images from around the globe.
Nicole is a mother, blogger, and born and bred New Yorker. Below she shares her thoughts on motherhood and the joys of raising her son in the city.
B+G: Describe your ideal family day.
Nicole: Waking up to a pot of fresh coffee and an episode of Ninja Turtles (so mom and dad can enjoy the coffee ;). Family breakfast at the table and then a quick change out of our pajamas before heading out the door to explore. We love to walk up to Spanish Harlem. The architecture and colors are reminiscent of Puerto Rico which I love. Lucas loves to dance to the salsa music we usually hear from passing cars. Eat a yummy lunch out and head back home for a family nap. Perfection.
B+G: What are your favorite things to do with Lucas?
Nicole: Get outside and explore. On lazy days we head to Central Park and just walk (and walk and walk). I have lived here for 29 years and I am still discovering new nooks and corners of the park. It is just so awesome to see NYC through Lucas’s eyes.
B+G: What is your philosophy when it comes to motherhood?
Nicole: Trust your instincts. There is nothing comparable to a mother’s intuition.
B+G: What was the biggest surprise about becoming a mother?
Nicole: As cliche as it is, the whole love aspect of being a mom. There is no way to properly articulate or express the unconditional and never ending love you feel for this other person. There’s nothing in the world like it and it’s the best and most scary feeling to love someone so much.
B+G: What excites you most about motherhood?
Nicole: Every day is something new with Lucas. We have real conversations now and I think he’s the funniest little human alive. He truly makes me laugh and he’s pretty much the raddest little sidekick. I’m a lucky mama.
B+G: You’re a multi-talented photographer and blogger. How has it been balancing a career and caring for your family?
Nicole: I don’t quite think I’ve mastered the art of balance! It’s all a give and take. I work 3 days in the office and the other two days I am home focusing on Lucas. To be honest I get most of my creative and blog tasks (writing, editing, etc.) done late at night after everyone has gone to bed. I have always been a night owl and this just works for me.
B+G: Any upcoming work projects you are excited about?
Nicole: Yes! Lucas and I will be working with some incredible apparel companies this Fall - including boy + girl (which we can’t get enough of)! We are also working with a few children’s companies and I’m over the moon excited for all these amazing opportunities and to share more.
B+G: How would you describe the aesthetic of your home?
Nicole: I would say it’s an eclectic mix of modern and vintage. I love thrifting and have had some pretty amazing luck - including a 70’s peacock chair I recently walked home from a local consignment shop. Our home is filled with old family photographs, lots of greenery, and love. Oh, and white. There is just something about white walls and crisp white bedding that makes me swoon.
B+G: How would you describe your own style? How has it changed since becoming a mother?
Nicole: My style is laid back. Lots of layering, crop tops, and simple dresses. It took some time but I have never been more confident about my body and style since having a child. There is something so empowering and sexy about knowing the insane capability of your own body.
B+G: What pieces would you consider staples for your wardrobe?
Nicole: High-wasted jeans, brown leather boots that I have had since college, a mix of black and white tees and tanks, and my leather jacket that I scored on a trip to Florence.
Lucas wears our Red Hoody Jacket available here.
B+G: What do you love most about raising Lucas where you live?
Nicole: NYC is the ultimate playground. There is always something to do and even walking to the local coffee shop can turn into an adventure. What we lack in space we have ten fold in culture.
B+G: Would you like to live anywhere else?
Nicole: I’m a born and bred New Yorker and will always call this city home. That being said I feel so calm and happy when I’m near water. In a perfect world my family and I would be bi-coastal. Now if only I could convince my fiancee.
