This season, we partnered with some of our favorite mothers who happen to be multi-talented artists, photographers, and designers. We asked them to capture their littles in their natural elements. The result has been a series of beautiful images from around the globe.
We got to know Madelon, an Amsterdam transplant and blogger living in Los Angeles with her husband and two littles. What began as a way to stay in touch with a dear friend from home transformed into a beautiful blog space called The Door In The Wall. Read on to hear Madelon's thoughts on all things motherhood.
B+G: What are the biggest gifts and challenges of motherhood?
Madelon: Time. To both questions. As a challenge to find or make the time to be alone, to do things for just you. But kids make you slow down. They make you make time to watch ants walk by, to see the planes in the air, to make sand castles for hours on end. To enjoy the here and now. To enjoy the little things.
B+G: Describe your ideal family day.
Madelon: These are the weekends, because we are all together. Wake up as late as possible, be lazy in the morning. Then we go out and do things. Beach, city, park whatever. Just enjoy the day and explore!
B+G: What is your philosophy when it comes to motherhood?
Madelon: Trust your instinct.
B+G: If you could go back 10 years, what would you tell yourself?
Madelon: Don't worry, you are doing fine and it all will work out. And stop being insecure and enjoy that figure while you still have it!
B+G: What excites you most about motherhood?
Madelon: To see my children grow up as happy, independent, confident and good people.
B+G: You are an amazing photographer and also work on the blog The Door In The Wall. What are the challenges of balancing your business and family life?
Madelon: Because I'm a stay at home mom my biggest challenge is to do it all, and still find some time to relax. But I'm so happy finally doing the things I really love, I don't mind.
B+G: What’s a typical work day like for you?
Madelon: I have no structure actually. I wish I did! But it's not a fulltime job, so for now I'm good. Usually I check mail etc. when I wake up. During naptime I work a little and when the kids are in bed I write my blog or edit my photos. And I do a lot in between everything. Walking to the supermarket while responding to mail. Sitting with my girl until she sleeps at night while finishing a blog post. It's not ideal, but it works.
B+G: How would you describe the aesthetic of your home?
Madelon: The base is white and bright. I love some good design mixed with unique finds. And then there is an explosion of colorful kids stuff. We live here, so it's far from a magazine home and often messy.
B+G: What pieces would you consider staples for your wardrobe?
Madelon: Skinny jeans, wide top and sneakers in winter and sandals in summer. Always.
B+G: What do you love most about raising your kids in Los Angeles?
Madelon: The possibility to be outside every single day. Open your windows, let in the light and never worry about rain.
B+G: If you could choose another city to live in for a year, where would it be?
Madelon: I adore Copenhagen. It's my favorite city ever. But I lost my heart to Amsterdam.
