Meet Abby Hantel! Abby is an LA based holistic nutritionist, doula, lactation educator and women's wellness expert. We asked her a few questions about her and her health consultations for women in preconception, pregnancy and postpartum.
B+G: How did your wellness journey first begin?
Abby: My wellness journey started organically, pun very much intended. I was working in fashion in New York and living off rice and beans and not feeling my best. That started me down the rabbit hole of health and wellness and eventually led to a move to Los Angeles, a masters in holistic nutrition, and doula training. I really believe that once you’ve experienced what it’s like to feel good and function optimally there’s no turning back so I’m on this journey for life!
B+G: For those who aren't entirely sure will you explain what a doula is?
Abby: A doula is someone who provides support and advocacy for an expectant mother from pregnancy through the early postpartum period. As a birth doula you’re there to provide physical and emotional support to the laboring mother to help her achieve a safe and empowered birth experience wherever she is choosing to birth. As a postpartum doula you’re there to provide whatever help the new mother needs in the first few weeks and help to ease her through the postpartum shift.
B+G: What advice would you give anyone looking to start a more holistic approach to living?
Abby: My advice at the start is always: don’t change what you’re doing, elevate it. I think it’s difficult to incorporate several new healthy habits all at once and the reality is that most of them probably won’t stick. It's much easier to stick to your current habits and make them as healthy as possible. So for example if you’re not a breakfast person and that morning cup of coffee is a must then use it as a vessel for protein, healthy fats, and herbs, elevating it from a cup of coffee to a superfood latte.
B+G: What do you love most about what you do?
Abby: My favorite part is getting to spend so much time in community with women. I get to be in service of women at such a powerful and transformational time in their lives, which keeps me both inspired and empowered in my own.
